Low Self Esteem: What Is It?
When you look in the mirror, what do you think about the reflection staring back at you? Maybe you don’t like everything that you see, but you have some great features that you love to stare at. Perhaps you don’t like what you see at all or you completely love every part of what you see. The thoughts that run through your mind when you look at yourself in the mirror are a reflection of your self esteem.
Self esteem refers to the way you think about yourself. If you have low self esteem, then you don’t think of yourself too highly. This could mean some or all of the following:
How low self esteem manifests itself in day-to-day life depends on your personality, lifestyle, and the people around you. Some people who struggle with low self esteem talk and think about themselves in a negative manner but are successful in their daily lives regardless. If that applies to you, then you may not feel content with the amount of success you have achieved or you may compare your success to others.
Other people with low self esteem struggle to achieve in life because they don’t believe in their ability to succeed. They may never try things that they would really like to do because they assume that they will just fail, they don’t have the skills needed to do those things, or that others will laugh at them. If this applies to you, then your low self esteem may lead you to sit on the sidelines when you should be at the center of the stage.
Everyone has internal thoughts that run through their mind constantly during the day, but those with low self esteem may have more negative thoughts about themselves than people with healthier levels of self esteem. If you find yourself constantly criticizing your own abilities or backing down from things you want because you don’t feel deserving, then chances are high that your self esteem could use a boost.
